You will need the follwing to purchase a firearm

1. Valid CA Drivers license or ID, or Military ID with a copy of current orders to California.

2. Proof of residence (car registration is usually easiest) -- Only needed for hand guns. 

3. Firearm Safety Certificate (I can give you the test if you don't have one, click HERE for study guide) or a valid exemption. (Active duty or retired military, LEO or Retired LEO are the most common)

4. If you are having a firearm transferred that you purchased online, you need a copy of sales invoice/receipt. California requires me to collect sales tax if the seller did not. 

If your DL/ID states "Federal Limits Apply" like the picture above, you will need ONE of the following: 

1. Valid Passport or Passport Card

2. Certified copy of Birth Certificate (Abstract copy or photo copies not allowed). 

3. Documents with your Alien Registration number or I-94 number.  

If your DL/ID does not have your current address on it you will need a government issued document with your name and current address on it. Car registration is usually easiest.
